Shaping a New Economic Map

Held in conjunction with President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit, the meeting brought together senior leaders representing both governments and corporate sectors to discuss the next phase of bilateral economic cooperation. More than just a conventional business exchange, the roundtable signaled a shift in the direction of Korea-UAE economic relations. Cooperation is expanding from a traditional focus on infrastructure construction and energy to a broader engagement encompassing data, AI, culture, and food, highlighting a transition toward the future economy.
The UAE has emerged as a global economic hub driven by bold innovation strategies, while Korea seeks to be globally competitive in advanced industries, manufacturing, and cultural content. The roundtable underscored how these complementary strengths are converging, confirming that cooperation models aimed at joint prosperity are evolving to meet the demands of a changing global landscape.

Two Countries That Created Miracles from Ground Up

In his opening remarks, FKI Chairman Jin Roy Ryu emphasized the shared experience of Korea and the UAE as “countries that created miracles from the ground up” underscoring the underlying strength of bilateral cooperation. He noted that the combination of Korea’s technological capabilities and the UAE’s innovation capacity has made the two nations trusted partners in energy, infrastructure, and defense, and identified AI as the central pillar of future innovation cooperation.
Chairman Ryu pointed out that the UAE is targeting global leadership in AI in the 2030s, while Korea holds strong competitiveness in AI semiconductors and applied technologies. On this basis, he stated that the two countries could jointly build a global AI innovation hub. He further clarified that the next phase of bilateral cooperation is not merely an expansion into additional sectors, but a joint entry into entirely new industrial ecosystems.

“With the UAE aiming to become a global AI leader in the 2030s and Korea possessing world-class competitiveness in AI semiconductors and applied technologies, we can work together to build a global hub for AI innovation.”
- Jin Roy Ryu, Chairman of FKI

A Gathering of Economic Leaders

A defining feature of the roundtable was the direct participation of key economic leaders from both countries. From the UAE, senior figures including Crown Prince Khaled, Mubadala CEO Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and ministers responsible for investment and foreign trade attended, clearly signaling strong commitment to cooperation. From Korea, the heads of the country’s top ten business groups participated in person, demonstrating deep trust in the Korea-UAE partnership.
With participation from both government and business leaders, the meeting was structured to closely integrate policy-level discussions with cooperation proposals from companies. This approach created a practical cooperation framework for alignment among corporate business plans and the government’s strategic direction.
The presence of leading UAE institutions across investment, energy, advanced technology, and consumer goods and distribution further illustrated that cooperation with Korea is regarded as a strategic national priority.

A Partnership Looking to the Future
Advanced Industries

Korean companies including Samsung, Hyundai Motor, LG Electronics, SK, and NAVER highlighted the need to jointly establish an AI-based innovation hub with the UAE. On the UAE side, Mubadala, Global Jet Technic, and Hub71 participated, exploring the potential for joint projects in data, AI, and smart city development.
SK, in particular, described the UAE as a “strategic partner” and expressed strong commitment to future technology collaboration. Korean startup Nota also presented concrete cases such as AI-based traffic management, helping lay the groundwork for practical cooperation.

Defense, Energy, and Infrastructure

In defense, energy, and infrastructure, discussions focused on expanding next-generation projects based on existing cooperation achievements. GS Energy introduced collaboration measures in energy transition such as clean hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia. Korea Electric Power Corporation proposed future power infrastructure cooperation, including HVDC and energy storage systems, building on the successful experience of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.
From the UAE, organizations such as the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), EDGE Group, and the Tawazun Council participated, expressing interest in deepening defense and energy technology cooperation. The two sides came to a consensus on further upgrading their existing partnerships.

Culture, Including Food, Beauty, and Content

In the cultural sector, discussions focused on expanding cooperation in everyday consumer culture, centered on K-Content and K-Food. CJ presented distribution strategies linked to entertainment, food, and beauty, drawing on its experience with KCON events in the Middle East. Samyang Foods shared plans to expand in the region through locally tailored products and halal certification.
UAE companies such as LuLu Group and Sarya Holdings expressed interest in cooperation on K-Food distribution, confirming the potential for broader collaboration in consumer goods and cultural industries.

At the roundtable, Korean companies shared concrete visions for cooperation across three areas: advanced industries; defense, energy, and infrastructure; and culture, including food, beauty, and content.
By confirming strategic cooperation across technology, energy, defense, and culture, the meeting elevated bilateral economic relations to a new level. It was particularly significant in that cooperation was oriented toward new growth areas centered on AI, digital technologies, and soft, instead of focusing solely on traditional areas of cooperation such as infrastructure and energy.
Building on this momentum, the business communities of both countries plan to strengthen long-term partnership by exploring joint projects in areas with strong potential for practical collaboration, including AI-based future industries, clean energy transition, and food and content distribution.
Korea and the UAE are outlining a future-oriented economic partnership by moving beyond traditional industrial cooperation and driving forward innovation and sustainability efforts.
